The 20th Anniversary of the martyrdom of Sr. Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN
This February 2025, Notre Dame Virtual School will focus on the ministry and mission that the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur are providing today and the legacy of Sr. Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN who was murdered in the Amazon (February 12, 2005).

“A citizen of Brazil and the United States, Sister Dorothy spent nearly four decades defending the rights of poor settlers as well as working to save the rain forest from powerful ranchers bent on destroying it. On February 12, 2005, less than a week after meeting with the country’s human rights officials about threats to local farmers from loggers and landowners, she was shot by hired gunmen and left to die on a muddy country road. Sister Mary Johnson, the International Congregational Leader of the Sisters, told the conference that years before Pope Francis’ magnificent Laudato Si’, Dorothy was hearing and articulating the cries of the poor and the cries of the earth. Her prophetic words and actions became a symbol of hope for those who struggled for life and dignity in the Amazon.

Ponder Jesus’ call to live in abundance: “I have come that you may have life, and that you may have it more abundantly” is a Bible verse from John 10:10. The term “abundant life” refers to a life that is full of joy and strength for the spirit, soul, and body.
